The Teaching Certificate program is designed to assist graduate students and others who teach at UOIT. The program will help instructors develop their teaching skills and expand their knowledge about teaching and learning in the post secondary education environment.
The program is available to those who are interested in a teaching role, in classrooms, tutorials, or labs. Priority will be given to graduate students who are currently teaching assistants. The goals of the program are to:
Improve upon facilitation, discussion, and assessment techniques and skills
Advance knowledge of teaching and learning through reflection
Foster collegial support to discuss teaching issues
Prepare participants for academic job markets and other careers where facilitation and communication skills are needed
The curriculum for the program focuses on the development of teaching skills and the theoretical foundations of higher learning. Workshops and assignments emphasize the following areas:
Active learning strategies appropriate to your discipline
Group work and techniques
Effective discussion for learning
Methods for teaching critical thinking and writing skills
Assessing student learning
